Andy Martino is a Race-Baiting Coward

The Toy Department launched 12 days ago as a result of Jarvis and myself being absolutely fed up with the lack of professionalism, ethics, and class coming from the local beat writers.  We were reading columns, tweets, and listening to talk radio that was frustrating us more and more everyday.  The negativity hemorrhaging from the opinions of these third-rate hacks was sickening to local sports fans, like ourselves.  And then this straw broke the camel's back.

This isn't by any means a new story, but I thought with the home opener approaching, it may be a relevant time to revisit the disreputable trash written by Andy Martino, as well as his other shortcomings.

In this column entitled "Castillo's Woes Run Skin Deep," Andy Martino does about as good a job writing an editorial filled with legitimate substance, as he does growing a beard.  He starts off this abomination by citing Luis Castillo's 2009 statistics, or at least part of them.  He mentions Castillo's .302 batting average, but fails to include his 40 RBI and his whopping 16 extra base hits.  And what about his 2010 stats?  Why would Martino mention them?  They were God-awful, and clearly justified a barrage of boos from the Citi Field faithful.

But to what did Martino attribute the boos?...  His .235 batting average in 2010?  No...  How about his 17 RBI?  Nope...  OK, I got it.  what about the fact that this player was making over $6 mil and not even coming close to being worth his awful contract?  Wrong again...

Andy Martino suggested that Luis Castillo was treated poorly by the fans, not due to the fact that he was significantly underachieving, but because Mets fans are racist.

That's right, the fans that embraced Pedro Martinez (Dominican, like Castillo) as the Metropolitan's savior... the crowd that loudly chants "Jose Jose-Jose-Jose..." in high praise of Jose Reyes (also Dominican), are a bunch of racists, according to Martino.

Martino referred to Castillo as "one of the toughest and most passionate Mets" and doesn't seem to understand how he could be so unpopular.

Toughest?  Remember when he got hurt falling down the dugout steps, idiot?  And I'll tell you why he's unpopular, other than consistently grounding into timely clutch double plays, and having as much defensive range as Marty Noble, Castillo will never be forgiven (or forgotten) for the most embarrassing play in Subway Series history!  You know exactly what it is, I need not mention it ever again.  That's why we booed him, you dope, no other reasons needed!  As Met fans, when it comes to our players, the only colors we see are blue and orange.

Martino claimed in the Castillo situation, it's hard to ignore the race factor...  Well, I claim it never would have been a factor, if Martino never dreamed it up and put it in writing!

This beat writer technique of making a story up with no evidence to support it needs to stop, and Martino is one of the biggest culprits.

He has recently blocked The Toy Department on Twitter.  When asked why, he maturely responded with, "I block anything I want to, if the mood strikes. My twitter, my whims."  And then he cried to his mommy for a fresh tissue and his binky.  I guess he can't handle solid criticism.  Which is surprising to me considering how easily he can dish it out.

You know the real reason Andy Martino took a shot at Met fans?  Because he's a Philidelphia Phillies fan!  That's right, that chess club geek has an agenda and is clearly not an objective journalist.  He's so tired of his trashy brethren (appropriately) being classified as the worst fans in sports, his only line of defense is to try and bash us.  Jerkoff!

  2. Awesome post, and 100 percent correct. It would be nice if the beat writers eventually held some accountability for the drivel they pass off as journalism.

  3. Terrible, amateur-hour post. Sorry. Martino asking the question of race here is only a case of a columnist daring to raise a sensitive issue, and one that has legs, frankly. Only the most oblivious of Mets fans can deny they haven't heard members of their brethren muttering agitated comments about "Los Mets" or complaining that Omar brought in more Hispanic players than white ones. Are the majority of Mets fans racist? No, and if Martino implied that (I don't think he did) he shouldn't have. Do racists exist in the Mets fanbase? Probably, yeah, just as they probably do in every walk of life. Racism has long been America's dirty secret.

Oh, and to read one of those "professional journalists" you decry so much and their rational, logical thoughts on Martino's comments, read this link:

  5. Hey Tom, anyone can bring up a controversial subject with no "correct" answer. I agree that Castillo was hardworking & passionate. He's a professional athlete. Making millions. But it ain't show friends, it's show business...or something like that. Castillo wasn't producing in a way that helped the team. And he dropped that fucking popup. But yeah, I guess the Phillies are racist, too.

And hey Justin, we've only been around for like 2 weeks.

  6. I feel your anger and agree with your core points. The NY Post & Daily News both try to outdo themselves when it comes to Met bashing. I avoid them at all costs, but of course, I always wind up reading the stupid sh*t they write on all the blogs.

Anyway, in defense of the author of this post from the poster Tom: Firstly, Lighten up dude. Seriously, it's this blog's (and prob. this authors) first post. What were you expecting? Shakespeare? The premise of this blog is nobel, and I for on, like it.

Second, the only "legs" this story has was invented by the NY sports talking heads who had nothing better to say when they ran out of ways to say "Mets Suck". And while I will not attempt to generalize an entire sports base of fans--which apparently you have no qualms of doing--I can tell you that every met fan I've known gives the "Los Mets" zero credibility? Why? Because it's factually untrue. The Mets on average under Omar have had no more or less "latino" players on their team than any other. (side bar: I called out George Veshey of the NYT about this very subject numerous times. He was a good sport though....even replied). Check out this link and get your facts straight Tom: http://www.amazinavenue.com/2009/12/16/1202451/stop-saying-omar-minaya-only-goes

In conclusion, if you are a Met fan today, you have been through hell and back. You have to be pretty loyal. I can tell you from my experience, Race in NEVER a factor in how I judge a player. I judge them by, you know, how they PLAY!!!! We don't hate Omar because he signed Castillo. We hate that he signed players like Castillo for too many years and for too much money. Furthermore, the notion that a sports fan base that hates a player based on his skin color, heavily built on latino fans as well as the bastardized fans of the BK Dodgers and NY Giants--two of the first franchises to integrate their ball clubs--is a hard sell my friend. A hard sell indeed.

Keep the blog going. And let me know if you ever need a guest blogger.

  7. Before the Mets even had spring break...Adam Rubin started his race-baiting...

Mets broke camp with 11 latinos...

this year...Had Johan and ronny paulino been on the club...mets would've started the year with 9...

know why there is no controversy? because a white gm can hire anyone he wants, and there is never any racial controversy...we've had 6 years of the media saying that Omar was trying to build a latin dream team..when statistics show that the mets were never too far off from the rest of the pack...the only difference is that they were habitually at the lower end of latinos being on the squad...in
